Last night, Friday October 12, was an opportunity to see my friend Randy Miller play with The Myriad at the House of Blues in San Diego. Randy and Kristyn Miller are good friends from Redding, CA. What an eventful evening! Here is what went down.
Gun Shots. Kristyn drove down from Redding with their two kids to meet up with Randy who is touring with the Remedy tour with David Crowder, Phil Wickham and his band The Myriad. We drove the Miller’s daughter, Gillian, to the House of Blues. Upon exiting the parking garage…”pop pop…pop pop pop pop!” A man just a half block away shot off his gun in an apparent road rage incident. Had we arrived a moment earlier, we would have been in the middle of it!
Back Stage. I was like a kid going back stage and peeking into the green room areas. David Crowder was sound checking and I was gawking at him from back stage. Come on. You would, too. After all, his hair is just amazing. The gear…ooo…I was in a cold sweat counting guitars, keyboards and simply imagining the rock star thing.
Carded at 40! Yes, I was carded at The House of Blues. And, the security guy said I looked young. Now, my wife was carded too. Sweet! That made up, almost, for the fact of right in front of us hearing gunshots and seeing a guy wave a gun in the air. The security here was tight, and so I was not let back stage later on, but oh well.
The Myriad. My friend’s band is awesome! They were signed by the same guy who signed Mute Math and who discovered P.O.D. So, watch out for these guys. Randy is a fun drummer to watch and finally seeing him live his dream allows me to forgive him for leaving my worship team to become a rock star. The Remedy Tour is a cool one to catch–talented worship leader-songwriter Phil Wickham and the enigmatic David Crowder are worth it alone, but The Myriad really seems more at home in this kind of setting and shined.
Friends. We really miss friends, so having the Millers over our house and seeing Randy in action was a treat. Our kids love them, too. “Shrek in 3D”, board games, my homemade waffles and an unfortunate trip to the emergency room made our time together memorable.
