Safeway remodeled the two stores they have in Redding, CA this month. I am married to the grocery shopper queen of coupons and sales, so when the grand opening came and she needed to shop so I thought I would tag along. Besides, a new Starbucks counter was opening up in the store.
The parking lot was packed. Every aisle in the store was impeccably and fully stocked with goods. And, the loud speaker boomed with gleeful employees announcing the winners of free iPods. While we were shopping, at least three were given away. Boy, did I want to get to the check out line! Could we be winners of an iPod?
As we perused the store, every stop was calculated for value and to mark off the list prepared by my wife. "This is one sale" my wife said. Her hand was full of coupons…dozens of them! Everything from meat, to produce to cereal had a coupon. The cart was heavy enough by the time we got to the checkout register. Would I win an iPod?
The checker cheerfully rang up our sale. We rang in at $193…but wait…the coupons! After coupons, we ended up with a sale of $144. On top of that, we won a free coffee at the new in-store Starbucks. "Wow, Mrs. Kirkpatrick, you saved 46% today" said the checker which was replied by my wife with "that’s good, but my best is 49%." Yeah, my wife is good! We also got a $10 cash reward to boot. Did I win? No iPod…sigh.
But, wait a second. We ordered our coffees at the Starbucks counter and indeed won an iPod! I wish going to the grocery store could be this fun all the time.
