Song Time: Black and Blue Is My Heart

I thought it would be good to share a bit about some of the songs I have written and what is behind them.  I know, by CCLI survey, that some churches use these particular tunes and that people from my church have interest in knowing more about the music we do. (So, this is partly for you Neighborhood Church folks!)  The first song I would like to intro this way is called, "Black and blue is my heart."

Black And Blue Is My Heart
Rich Kirkpatrick

Verse 1
Black and blue is my heart
Worn and bruised from the fall
I can’t remove my stain
Or redeem my pain
Black and blue is my heart
Black and blue is my heart

Verse 2
Crimson red is Your blood
Dripping down down from Your brow
Please come remove my stain
And redeem my pain
Crimson red is Your blood
Crimson red is Your blood

Verse 3
White and clean is this robe
Righteousness and grace from Your throne
I now have a new name
No longer I’m ashamed
White and clean is this robe
White and clean is this robe

Verse 4
A mighty wind are You Spirit
Clear and free Your waters flow
You sealed my destiny
Your temple I must be
A mighty wind are You Spirit
A mighty wind are You Spirit

Verse 5
Black and blue is my heart
Worn and bruised from the Fall
I can’t remove my stain
Or redeem my pain
Black and blue is my heart
Crimson red is Your blood
White and clean is this robe

CCLI Song No. 3128620

This was one of those late night prayer times where I had to get my mind thinking correctly about the basics.  Can God redeem the pain in my life?  Even my mistakes?  How can I deal with the sin in my life and heart?  As a response to these prayers and reading the Bible, God allowed the above words to flow.

This song expresses a bit of the idea of some theological words such as justification and sanctification.  "Worn and bruised from the fall" refers to being apart from God both from being born into sin and having sinned.  We are also victims of sin as well as being guilty of sin. The second verse talks about where the blood of Christ comes in to cover me, and the third verse is the idea of imparted righteousness.  The interlude is really me dancing! (Well, not really.  But I feel like it…after knowing I am right before God, things really are worth celebrating.)  We can’t earn it.  The Spirit is in the fourth verse, working out my salvation or sanctification.  I am a temple of God.  I also have a destiny that is sealed.  I did not earn the gift of being righteous and that is secure.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the song.  The recording is a pretty bad one–a small mic in the back of my church a few years ago.  I have linked an mp3 (Download BlackandBlue.mp3)

and a pdf of the sheet music here

What do you think of the song?

  1. Hey Rich, I downloaded the .pdf file and I’m playing it in my mind right now. I’m also downloading the .mp3, but it’s a little slower, so I’ll have to listen to it when it gets done (Yes, I’m still on dial-up). The melody seems to flow effectively, and the changes move around nicely. The lyrics are awesome. I like how you progress from our sinful state, and move to the hope of salvation, the promise of cleansing, and the maturity of the Spirit. Very well done.
