Dallas Willard: Getting to Know Him

I am enjoying the “Know Your Evangelicals” series from the blog Evangelical Outpost.  Just a couple days ago they mentioned one of my favorites, Dallas Willard.  Two of his books really have impacted my thinking and spiritual dimension and are listed on my “recommended books” on my blog’s left side bar.

The Divine Conspiracy:  This book really challenges the way we think about sin and formation.  I am still grappling with this book years later!

Spirit of the Disciplines:  I love this book.  It lays out ways we can connect to God and is the best primer on the subject I have personally read.  What is a spiritual discipline?  Get the book to find out.

Tell me what you think of WIllard?  Have you read any of his books?

  5. In The Divine Conspiracy Willard lays out the gospel of the Coming Kingdom that Jesus preached. He defines salvation as a life of discipleship to Jesus.
I continue to be influenced by Willard’s definition of man’s purpose in The Spirit of the Disciplines. If our purpose is found in our imago Dei and lived out in our responsibility and authority over the created order, there is neccessitated a radical rethinking of much of what we hold as our framework of faith (as Western Christians at least).

I am interested in your take on Willard’s portrayal of the gospel that Jesus preached, especially in light of our earlier conversations…
