Creative Leadership: 5 Ingredients to draw out latent talent

The words “talent” and “latent” can easily be mistaken for some of us who switch letters on occasion. After making this mistake, I began to believe that something under the surface spoke to me. All talent is latent until it is released. To release talent requires much effort. Perhaps there are many of us living with such talent that no one really knows about. You might have a fine guitar in your closet with some ability to play it–latent ability.

One of my favorite rolls as a creative leader,  pastor and worship leader is drawing out talent. To catalyze talent I have found that there are conditions that when present help us accomplish this.

Here are five ingredients to draw out latent talent:

  1. Belief. When people know someone believes in them, they achieve far more than their single view of themselves allow. How do you express your belief in people?
  2. Resolve. Demonstration of commitment on the leaders part to be at his or her best. This models for those you serve your resolve. Do you as a leader show passionate commitment in what you do?
  3. Courage. It takes courage to reveal something one is insecure about. After all, when something is hidden it is likely a bad experience put it there. Do you have courage as a leader to reveal your story of overcoming these experiences?
  4. Safety. The setting has to be safe enough for your tribal members to give something a shot. This means organization, consistency and patience when things do not go your way.
  5. Challenge. Reaching for the moon may not get you there overnight, but surely will help you reach higher. People are drawn out then they can live for something larger. What standards do you hold up with your team? What picture of a future do they see in you?

So, talent is latent. Hopefully, these five ingredients if applied will help your people soar. Which of these five do you see most results in your leadership or setting?

  1. I think for us Belief is the biggest catalyst to drawing talent from our congregation. Often times, merely giving people permission to try something isn’t enough. Many times, people want to know that what their contributing to is offering value to changing people’s lives and furthering the Kingdom.

    1. When I think of belief I think of two things. One, it is seeing that potential and imprinting it on the person. They see you really do think they can do it. Of course, you must be savvy enough to be right about the latent gifting. That is a practice in leadership itself. Secondly, it is valuing then beyond the talent. It is them seeing you care for them simply as people.
