Geek or Rockstar: the “both and” of life and leadership

Well, I am actually neither a bonafide geek or a real rockstar. What is important is how funny it is that I can look like either with a simple haircut . What is even more important is the idea of “both and” and why labeling people or our ministries as one-all-or-nothing entities is old school. Either we evangelize or we disciple people. Either we are growing or not healthy. Either we have conflict or loving relationships in a staff.

The fact is that the law of “both and” pervade every area of our lives, making it a messy endeavor. It would be much easier to simply be one thing. We are told in business books to copy the In-n-Out model and just do hamburgers. What is interesting is that you can get that hamburger is so many ways that it could be that your options with variations supercede the smorgousbord approach entirely.

Imagine this: choice and simplicity? Or, to not be so serious, could I be both a rockstar and a geek?

  9. Mike would have to say “it”–how about any thoughts on “both and”–seriously. Or, did anyone actually read the post and look beyond the picture as illustrative to the idea of the “both and”?

  13. I have to go with the “simple” approach.I am who I am. No sway to one side or the other.
No trying to be you, or her or him, or them.
I grow in MY dirt, where God has me right now.
For the sake of the picture, I’m the soul patch. Like it or not, as everything around me changes, I go on being me.
At my age, 4 years from 40, I need to stop looking at others gifts, personal goals, and new endeavors, and find God everyday in my space and time.

  17. Do you have a twin brother Rich?
It’s in people’s nature to label things and try to simplify things. But people are diverse and everchanging, as far as what they look like.

  21. OK, I will be serious this time. We as the church need to be both and. We need to evangelize to reach others for Christ, we need to disciple others (the next generation for sure) so the church doesn’t die of old age. The whole growing and not healthy thing- if you’re not growing then something needs to change, missing the mark somewhere.
Resolving conflict is showing love to others, if you have to be lovey dovey all the time even when you don’t feel it then that will for sure cause conflict.

Some thing someone said to me a while ago (and I wish they would listen to their own words now) “People are messy, we need to look to help clean it up and move past it”

One giant leap into the smorgousboard will leave you nothing but a belly ache, steps need to be taken not leaps, programs are steps to the ultimate goal and that is a healthy, close, living organisms called church.

And as far as Rockstar or geek? You’re a geeky rockstar who happens to lead worship with the greatest team ever!
