Worship Set List June 1: Changes, videos, videos and annnouncements

Worshipbnnr At Sunridge Community Church this morning we completed our series “How to Stay Up During a Downturn” and the summer season has finally been launched.

Videos are cool in the services.  We had two announcement videos and one sermon clip and two big announcements in the service today.  What I fear sometimes is how videos and announcements in worship, whether in my church or others, make the service into a commercial for church programs.

There is nothing wrong with plugging church programs.  However, in communication more is less and less is more.  Right? How do my other worship leader friends coordinate communications and videos in the services?

We made a last minute song change, putting in a tune we learned with Michael Olson at a night of worship we did on Thursday.  “You Gave Your Life Away” by Paul Baloche and Kathryn Scott really is a great song.  I highly recommend it. Here are the songs…

  • Let God Arise – Tomlin, Chris | Cash, Ed | Reeves, Jesse
  • Love the Lord – Lincoln Brewster
  • Be The Centre – Michael Frye
  • You Never Let Go – Matt Redman
  • You Gave Your Life Away – Paul Baloche & Kathryn Scott

Stay tuned for a recap of the worship nights and rhythm workshop this week!

How was your worship weekend?

  1. like many things in church, the announcements have merely evolved. In the olden days it was on a bulletin board, then people just stood up front announcing something, today’s version with video is just a little more techologically grounded than it’s older brothers.

  5. announcements and videos and such are always different. we have a pastor of the day who does that sort of thing so a lot of the time it isn’t the job of the worship leader to communicate some of those things. now and then it is the job to help transition to that pastor of the day thematically. we usually work on that on monday or wednesday (tuesdays are too busy).

  9. In the past I was the Communications Director as well as Worship Arts Pastor, it was much easier to coordinate how we promoted things in Sunday and elsewhere in the churc. Also, I remember being on teams where I had that person in my programming meetings. Do any of you guys out there have that role in your church staff, or share that role?

  13. I hate announcements. When worship services gets crowded, the first things to go is time for prayer and worship and response.
So I’m like the announcement Nazi; I put big constraints on people who want to make special plugs.

And video DOES NOT WORK for us. Our people completely zone out if we show video. Not sure why, but I’ve tried to avoid it. Generally, they respond much better to live people.
