KORG Triton Extreme 88 Review

  285338

The Korg Triton Extreme 88 is a keyboard I have had for only a month now. I am only a bit geeky, so things with this many knobs, wheels, touch screens, sliders and buttons scare me. I was looking for an 88-key synth with weighted action that could be both a performing board and a piece in my project studio. I like the Yamaha Motif ES, but this is the one I ended up getting from Guitar Showcase in San Jose, CA.

ACTION: As a piano, it really has a nice feel. When you get higher or lower the tension on the action changes to mimic what a pianos action feels like. Nice. I loved the Motif, so I was a bit concerned that this would not deliver the Yamaha experience. Case settled.

SOUNDS: First, it has a nice piano sound. I love the factory sounds, especially since I had a Korg N364 for a while. The combinations are great and I have not even had chance to play them all yet. There are plenty of sounds–1280 combinations with 1334 sounds and 50 drum kits at 120-voice polyphony.

USER ISSUES: The touch panel and how it is designed allows quick movement to the many patches and it is easy to edit parameters on the combinations. It is heavy, but it is supposed to be road-worthy and is a full-sized keyboard with 88 “weighted” keys. It is nice to have a pal around to hall it. Definitely get the case with casters!

GEEK ZONE: I use this instrument for worship leading and like using percussion loops. I can send them to different outs so the click or loop is in the monitors and controlled separately from my live key patches. It has 160 MB of wave ROM, sampled at 48 kHz. Wow. The sequencer has yet to be judged, since I have not utilized it. The sampling is way easy and it can connect to USB devices for storage! See more detailed specs at www.sweetwater.com and at the Korg website.

COOL FACTOR: Well, it looks cool. The blue light under the vacuum tube is very cool–“valve force” is what they call it. Cool. The color is a nice blue-gray. Cool. Cool.

PRICE: $2900.00 is the going price (Lists at $3600.00)

Overall, I feel no buyers remorse for this baby. Besides, my son loves it, too. Just look at the fun he is having in the pictures! Harmony Central has a review on this you can read here.

  1. I know nothing about keyboards since I only play guitar. However, we use this keyboard (I don’t know if it’s the 88) but we’ve used the Triton Extreme for a year now and have found it to be excellent. We now have a different person playing it than a year ago and they are discovering all kinds of cool stuff on it.
Plus it looks really slick. 🙂
